Plans to convert an office block in Southend into a care home would generate 66 employment opportunities, according to a development firm.

Runwood Homes has resubmitted an application for a 70-bed care home in the Essex town to Southend Council, after having a similar plan rejected by the local authority earlier this year, the Echo reported.

However, the new proposal has received the backing of the leader of the council's independent group Martin Terry, who welcomed the opportunity to bring new jobs to the east of England.

Roger Sinden, spokesman for Runwood Homes, explained that the employment opportunities would be varied.

He told the local newspaper: "We will be retaining office jobs as well as providing a variety of new jobs in the care home itself."

The east of England's employment situation was boosted further last week when the Lowestoft Journal reported that the construction of offshore wind farms near Suffolk could create 5,000 jobs in the region.
