A senior Conservative politician has praised the government on its handling of unemployment during the recession.Lord Freud, who is the Tory's spokesman on welfare, claimed that the Labour Party has reacted to the economic downturn better than John Major's government in 1992, the Guardian reported.
The former businessman, who admitted that his remarks might not be "politically correct", suggested that the government has contributed to saving more than 500,000 jobs.
Speaking during debates on the government's child poverty bill, Lord Freud specifically praised the flexibility of the UK's labour market, which has allowed many businesses to reduce working time rather than jobs.
He said: "There has been a substantial difference between this recession and other recessions."
Last week, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation - alongside KPMG - published a report disclosing that the number of permanent staff placements made in January continued to rise.
