The cabinet has launched its strategy to build skills in government. It commits leaders from the civil service and the military to work together to develop higher professional standards and was launched by head of the civil service, Sir Gus O'Donnell. The scheme should improve value for money, close skills gaps and ensure that candidates for the future workforce are better prepared for civil service jobs. He said: "The UK's ability to keep pace in this competitive environment will be determined by the skills of its workforce. "Each of us has to make a commitment to learn - to recognise that today's standards are not good enough for tomorrow." The strategy hopes to create a new environment, in which employers across government can target investments, deliver high quality skills development and link educational institutions with government employers. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed an increase in both the number of people in employment and the employment rate.
