The government has announced the launch of a new employment commission. The UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) will supersede - the Sector Skills Development Agency and the National Employment Panel - which closed on March 31st. "To maintain Britain's competitive position in the global economy, it's essential that we boost the nation's skills," said business secretary, John Hutton. "This new commission will help us in our drive towards a knowledge economy". UKCES will advise ministers on the performance of government initiatives in meeting business challenges and employment needs. It will also fund and manage 25 Sector Skills Councils, which are led by employers and feed back employment and skills information. John Denham, secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, noted the commission "has an unprecedented opportunity to influence the delivery of employment and skills policy".
