Employers and members of the government have praised the skills of workers who serve in the Territorial Army (TA). The service is celebrating its 100th anniversary and Des Brown, secretary for defence, has launched a campaign to acknowledge its contribution to the UK. He said: "I would like to say thank you to 35,000 people currently serving with the TA, who all serve side by side, facing the same risk and dangers." Speaking on behalf of employers, Anne Minto, HR director at energy company, Centrica, explained that by serving in the TA workers learnt new skills "particularly in areas such as leadership, teamwork and thinking under pressure". TA soldiers currently make up four per cent of the UK's manpower in Iraq and eight per cent in Afghanistan. Many of the volunteers are specialists and use expertise from their civilian jobs, while others join the TA to soldier and learn new skills.
