Business is improving its data security and backing up its files offline, new research has revealed. Nine out of ten UK firms have accepted data recovery is an important part of their IT expenses, although only a quarter have a disaster recovery plan and 15 per cent fail to back-up offline. The government-backed research by consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers noted the situation has improved. "The number of companies with a disaster recovery plan has gone up," said partner, Chris Potter. "However, experience shows that plans are only effective if regularly tested. It is a concern that only half of plans have been tested in the last year." Most jobs produce data in some form and employees are often responsible for retaining, handling and storing electronic information. The move towards an information society has increased the number of jobs with access to digital information and companies are now keen to add further security precautions. "One in five large companies now automatically replicates transaction data to an off-site location as those transactions occur," noted Martin Sadler, director of HP's systems security lab, which helped with the survey.
