Key workers are to get a housing grant of £1500, prime minister Gordon Brown has announced. The cash will be available for buyers who take up a shared equity loan under the government's Open Market Homebuy scheme. "We want to do more for people who may need an extra hand to buy their first home," Mr Brown said. "By offering new grants and sharing a stake in their home, we are making the dream of a new home more affordable for thousands of low-income, first-time buyers and key workers such as nurses and teachers." The government describes key workers as someone employed by the public sector in a frontline role delivering an essential public service in health, education and community safety. Many employees struggle to earn enough cash to save for a deposit and property in their local area is often too expensive.
