Temporary work can help people keep their skills up-to-date, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has said. Tom Hadley, director of external relations, explained that business is keen to recruit temporary staff and workers can benefit from this. He said according to the REC's figures, "the temp market is actually very strong at the moment". "It helps you to get into a workplace and this can sometimes lead to permanent employment," Mr Hadley noted. "Temping certainly helps to update your skills as well." He acknowledged temporary work might not suit everyone's long-term aspirations, although it is a good "starting point". Some firms are reluctant to hire full-time staff because of worries of an economic downturn. Mr Hadley added small businesses are keen to hire temporary staff and prefer to do so when they grow. Many employers have offered permanent positions and careers after first taking an employee on in a temporary job.
