Coaching at work: Still in early stages

Coaching in the workforce is still in its early stages, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Findings from its report, Developing Coaching Capability in Organisations, has showed a wide variety of practice and some organisations are adopting a trial and error approach, it has been reported. Dr McGurk, learning and development adviser, said: "Learning and development professionals must be in tune with their organisation, while understanding and sometimes protecting the value coaching can offer." The majority of UK employers (71 per cent) use coaching at work. Sessions are often devised to improve employees' communication organisational and personal skills. Employers have previously complained they invest too much time to train workers in the most basic skills. The problem was identified back in 2000, when the Association of Graduate Recruiters revealed many employers encouraged new workers to take a gap year, in which they could pick up fundamental skills.
