Keeping talented employees is the key to gaining competitive advantage in difficult economic conditions, Personnel Today has reported. It revealed a poll by business services firm KPMG, which found 83 per cent of respondents said their staff gave them the edge over rivals. "It is very frustrating for those businesses who spend time and money to train staff only to lose them not long after," commented Ronnie McCombe, head of people services. Two thirds of respondents said the current skills shortage was affecting their success and effectiveness and 75 per cent felt UK workers were lacking literacy and numeracy skills. The organisations questioned said a shortage of staff with customer service skills (73 per cent), the cost of employment (69 per cent) and the increased flexibility of the workforce (62 per cent) had caused them difficulties. Employment minister, Steven Timms announced recently every region and county now benefits from higher employment than ten years ago.
