Trade Unions have increased the pressure on prime minister, Gordon Brown to raise public sector pay. The calls come after the PM scrapped the ten per cent tax rate and caused dissent amongst his party. Industrial action is scheduled for Thursday, with 100,000 of the Public and Commercial Services union's members planning to strike in protest at poor pay. Mark Serwotka, general secretary, said: "We have recently negotiated agreements on redundancy and privatisation. We call on the government now to address low pay and our demands for fair pay for public sector workers to at least the level of inflation." Representatives from the National Union of Teachers are angry they were only offered a 2.45 per cent increase. "The education of our children will be harmed if the government continues to undervalue teachers," Phil Clarke, secretary of Lewes, Eastbourne and Wealden NUS, warned.
