Immigration has boosted the UK's economy and mass migration has kept interest rates down, according to a new report. Research by not-for-profit employment group, the Work Foundation, has claimed immigration is vital for the economy. "On the available evidence, the best judgement is that the economic case for free movement in the EU is strong," said the report's author, David Coats. "The UK's ageing population, with fewer young people entering the jobs market, means that a fair and flexible policy of managed migration is essential if the economy is to continue to grow." It called on government to lift restrictions on Romanian and Bulgarian workers and recommended it produce more accurate data, enforce the minimum wage and retain the points system for immigrants seeking access to the country. However, the House of Lords committee inquiry, which was published recently found no evidence to support the belief immigrants had economically benefited the UK.
