Graduate recruitment will ride out the credit crunch despite fears that the job market may suffer amid wider economic woes.
That is the belief of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) which says that university leavers should continue to seek out jobs and look for opportunities.
While the crunch may hit some finance sector jobs next year, AGCAS communications director, Elspeth Farrar, said graduates didn't "need to panic just yet".
"Inevitably, I think there's an element of anxiety on the part of students – because [the credit crunch] is very high profile, it is in the news all the time," she acknowledged, but stressed the underlying indicators remained positive.
"I think the message to students should still be: carry on applying as normal, carry on thinking about trying to get relevant work experience, internships etcetera.
"At the moment, the area that appears to be most obviously affected will be the finance sector.
"So maybe students need to begin to think about broadening their ideas about who and what they might be applying for. But I don't think there's any need to panic just yet – most places are still indicating that they will still be recruiting to some extent in the coming year."
According to the Association of Graduate Recruiters Winter Review 2008, released in February, vacancies for graduates are predicted to increase by 16.4 per cent.
