Privacy groups challenge employee database

The National Staff Dismissal Register (NSDR) is likely to be illegal, a watchdog has claimed. A spokesperson for Privacy International said employers need first to convince parliament before the register is introduced. "There is no way that this database is necessary or in the substantial public interest," they claimed. The NSDR will keep details of workers accused or convicted of stealing and fraud. It is currently supported by a number of key retailers including Harrods, HMV, Mothercare & Selfridges. Privacy International's representative said it was a further way of tracking and auditing employees and warned if its information was wrong "it would come very near to defamation and libel if it prevented someone from getting a new job". Action Against Business Crime started the scheme and explained it will allow employers to "search for details of an applicant, ensuring both cost saving through reduction in losses, and a more efficient recruitment process".
