MoD staff were 'transferred and fired'

Thu 10 Jul 2008

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) transferred more than 1,000 staff to a private sector company, which later made them redundant an employment union has claimed. The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union has blasted the MoD for its handling of workers tasked to complete the government's Defence Information Infrastructure programme. "This is an all too familiar tale of public sector IT privatisation going wrong, and could have a serious negative impact for the MoD's operations both here and overseas," commented the union's general secretary, Mark Serwotka. The National Audit Office (NAO) has revealed the MoD project is running over budget and "riddled with problems", Personnel Today, has reported. By unifying defence computer systems from offices to battlefields, the military hope to introduce a single setup to manage its varied tasks. Mr Serwotka said: "It is appalling that the MoD transferred its staff into a redundancy situation." Tim Burr, head of the NAO, explained the move is a difficult one and "further concerted action" would be needed to see the project through.
