Boris will introduce 'living wage'

Mon 14 Jul 2008

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, will introduce a new 'living wage' for workers employed by City Hall, the Guardian has reported. It said he will announce an increase on July 28th, which will see workers filling job vacancies at the council guaranteed £7.40 per hour. Mr Johnson was said to have responded to pressure from London Citizens, a collection of community leaders and union representatives. The announcement was to have been made sooner, however, the paper reported, it was delayed following the resignation of one of the mayor's deputies, Ray Lewis. A cleaner working at City Hall, a general administrator employed by Transport for London and a secretary for the Greater London Authority will all be guaranteed to not be paid less than the new figure. The national minimum wage is currently £5.52 – it was introduced in 1999 and was first set at £3.60 per hour.
