Skills initiative launched to fill jobs in Thames Gateway

The government has launched an initiative to increase education and skills to help fill new jobs in the Thames Gateway.

Its Thames Gateway Skills Plan will be delivered through the Learning and Skills Council and aims to give people skills that the area currently lacks.

"Skills are the key to successful companies, sustainable communities and individual prosperity," explained further education minister Bill Rammell.

He said investment by the government would help every resident be empowered to contribute to the area's regeneration.

The plan explained how £1.6 billion would be spent on teaching and learning, with £1 billion invested in raising young people's educational attainment.

It also hopes to encourage young adults to move onto higher-level skills training and professional jobs.

The Thames Gateway is the biggest regeneration project in Europe – it hopes to create around 7,900 new jobs and build 8,200 new homes.

Most firms operate their customer services from dedicated call centres - sometimes in separate locations. So when new business develops in London, calls to the company could go to workers in call centres in Cardiff.
