The government admitted it lost data on 45,000 people following high profile laptop losses.

Ministry of Justice records have revealed the information went missing during nine separate incidents.

Its response in each case was to assure "measures were in place to mitigate risk to individuals and to prevent a re-occurrence of the incident".

Some bosses remain concerned the increase in flexible working could further increase the loss of commercially sensitive materials.

The European Network and Information Security Agency has recently advised companies of 12 threats from accidental loss or data theft from portable storage drives.

It said an 'always on' trend has increased their use and led to companies overlooking the dangers of data loss.

Executive director Andrea Pirotti commented: "Data loss is not just a security concern for the IT department but a strategic issue with far-reaching implications for a firm's future."
