A challenge to the credibility of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has received support from among its members.

An attack by former chairman and current central London branch secretary, Barry Hoffman claimed its structure, constitution and operation need reviewing.

According to Personnel Today, 61 per cent of its poll respondents said the CIPD was no longer relevant to modern business leaders.

"Why is it relentlessly focusing on branch activities that are so difficult for people to attend?" Mr Hoffman previously asked.

"For most busy people in the profession, what do they get from these, other than the odd employment law update?"
Mr Hoffman complained too many CIPD events were devised for students and not working professionals.

The Institute has countered his claims, saying it is "in good form, with record numbers of members and a solid financial performance".
