The next generation of IT system at work will be chosen by employees, according to new research. Analyst, Forrester has said that "technology populism" will see computing innovations such as social networking and internet- based collaboration services dictate working practices. "For many employees, the telephone and e-mail are being replaced by text messaging, instant messaging and mobile devices such as iPhones and Blackberry's, and social computing tools such as Facebook and Wikipedia," claimed analyst, Matthew Brown. Industry is increasingly looking to social applications to help internal communications, despite some initial skepticism. Many companies have restricted access to social networking. A study by security company Sophos found that 43 per cent of respondents said their employer had gone further and banned its use. Forrester went on to predict one further development, the increased use of 'cloud-based' computing. This is where organisations stop using local servers to handle applications and use public networks instead.
