The government's new points-based immigration system comes into force today and has serious implications for recruiters. Under the new rules, employers who knowingly hire illegal migrant workers could face fines of £10,000 and in extreme circumstances go to jail. "The points system means only those migrants Britain needs can come to the UK," said immigration minister, Liam Byrne. Initially, the new system will apply to highly skilled migrants already resident in the UK who are hoping to extend their stay. Government figures show that in recent years immigrants contributed £6 billion to economic growth. "There is a range of evidence that suggests that, overall, the economic impact of migration is beneficial for the UK," a Home Office spokesperson said. "In recent years migrants have made a more positive contribution to the public finances than native workers."
