National Trust staff sent to save the planet

Thu 14 Feb 2008

Employees of the National Trust have been given an extra day off to help reduce its carbon footprint. The charity has launched a Green Leap Day initiative to help fight climate change, the Times has reported. It will encourage staff to spend the extra free time to promote environmentally friendly practices such as recycling. "We want organisations of all sorts and sizes to come on board in whatever form they are able, to encourage people to do something for the environment," said Dame Fiona Reynolds, the trust's general director. Trade Union General Secretary, Brendan Barber said: "Giving employees an extra day off work while encouraging them to think about what they can do to go greener sounds like a great idea." A total of 4,800 staff and 49,000 volunteers from the charity will take the day off. Dame Reynolds was keen for other companies to join in the fight against what she described as "one of the biggest changes we are facing today".
