This quarter, there are 175,000 more people in employment, the latest report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has showed. It revealed that there are more vacancies, less unemployment and average earnings have increased. Employment minister Stephen Timms was pleased with the figures which he said represented "a strong and stable labour market". "Our welfare reform policies are improving the opportunities for people who have traditionally been the hardest to reach, helping them to make the move off benefits and into work," he claimed. According to ONS figures, the number of jobs on offer rose by more than 6,000, the unemployment rate fell to 5.2 per cent and the average earnings index (AEI) - excluding bonuses - was up to 3.7 per cent. With more people in jobs and less claiming from the state, the government will benefit from an increase in income tax contributions.
