Enhanced health at work

Tue 19 Feb 2008

Bupa has launched a major project which aims to help employers support health and wellbeing in their workers. The initiative will explore how policy and practice can be improved and will assess the benefits of good workplace health. Working with the Oxford Health Alliance, RAND Europe and The Work Foundation, it hopes to asses current trends as well as the changing demographic of the workforce. Dr Andrew Vallance-Owen, group medical director, said: "The workplace has a key role to play in improving the nation's health, not only by getting people back to work after sickness, but also by promoting positive health and wellbeing." Additionally, the study will investigate sickness absence and its effect on productivity and is timed to coincide with the findings of a government report into the health of working people. "Early insights from our work suggest that people's lifestyle choices are changing and having a greater impact on their health than ever before," commented Dr Vallance-Owen. Reliable internet connections and flexible working practices have allowed many more people to work from home.
