Managers working too hard

Bosses are working too many hours for too few returns, a new study has found. According to the Chartered Management Institute, recent efforts to reduce working hours have failed to have a positive effect. The research found 89 per cent regularly work more than the hours they are contracted for, only one in three worked excess hours by choice and nearly half claimed the extra hours had prevented them from developing skills. Jo Causon, director, marketing and corporate affairs said the study raised two important questions. "Why are employers ignoring the impact of long hours on the health and performance of their employees and what responsibility are employees taking for how they manage themselves?" she commented. The CMI's Quality of Working Life report has suggested Britain's long hours culture was not caused by bosses – it claimed only two per cent of respondents who worked extra hours felt "pressurised to do it".
