Pensioners plan to work on

Thu 24 Jan 2008

Despite nearing retirement, one-third of workers aged between 50 and 64 want to keep on working, new research has found. Personneltoday.com reported a study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) that revealed 31 per cent would keep working if they were allowed flexible conditions. It found that men were more likely to continue than women, but currently only 11 per cent of workers stay on. The authors of the study said the government could help more by "extending the right to request flexible working beyond parents and carers and making pension arrangements more flexible". "If the government fails to do this, its target of having a million older people in work will become a mere aspiration," said reward advisor, Charles Cotton. Most people questioned said they would stay on because of financial needs, although 38 per cent would do so because they liked working with others. The Employment Equality Age regulations were introduced in 2006 to ensure the fair treatment of older employees.
