Retention 'and' recruitment

Businesses need to work harder to retain, and not just recruit staff, a new study has claimed. A survey of more than 300 companies has revealed 47 per cent of human resources professionals admitted they had a problem retaining workers. The Employee Retention Survey 2008 by TalentDrain found that while 93 per cent had implemented initiatives over the last year, two-thirds said they wanted to reduce employee turnover. "HR practitioners pay lip service to retention but they still regard recruitment as more important," said the report authors. The study found that staff leave work for different reasons than HR practitioners believe – it recommended that more accurate exit data would help firms better understand retention issues. Its authors warned: "Unless more organisations monitor staff turnover, understand who is leaving, and why, and implement targeted interventions, then employee retention will continue to slip through the cracks."
