Britain enjoying 'full employment'

Recently elected Department for Work and Pensions Secretary, James Purnell says he wants the UK to have the highest employment rate in the world. Speaking on BBC One's The Andrew Marr Show, when he discussed the current state of the country's job market, Mr Purnell was optimistic about the future. He told the programme: "We've gone from a situation where unemployment was the big problem, down to one where now we've reached full employment." He explained that having achieved "a situation where unemployment was the big problem, down to one where now we have reached full employment," was not enough. "What we want to do now is to go from having, you know, the highest employment that we've ever had in this country, to having the highest of any country in the industrialised world," he said. There are, however, concerns that Britain is about to enter a recession, which could trigger job losses and put increased strain on the welfare state.
