Managers not managing

Tue 29 Jan 2008

New research has suggested that managers find it difficult to manage employees who are not succeeding at work. Only a third of employees who were underperforming said their manager was doing a good job of communicating the financial needs of the business. The European-wide study by Watson Wyatt also found bosses were not as proficient in giving feedback to these employees. Senior consultant Carole Hathaway said: "Employees perform better if they have a clear understanding of their organisation's goals and what they can personally do to contribute towards these." She said one approach would be to work with managers to "raise the bar for moderate and poorer performers". However, from the findings of the study she concluded, "few employers are doing a good job of this". A variety of management skills can be applied to help employees perform better –bonuses and improved contracts often help to make workers feel valued.
