Government under pressure on equal pay

Wed 30 Jan 2008

The deputy chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission has urged the government to uphold the law, and insist on equal pay for women. Baroness Margaret Prosser made the call on BBC Two's Daily Politics programme and criticised suggestions that giving women full equality could have a marked effect on public services. She acknowledged the adoption of equal pay could cause the government some financial worries but insisted, "somebody has got to take responsibility". "At the end of the day the government is there to ensure that the law of the land is upheld, these women are entitled to their money," she said. Baroness Prosser also called on organisations to ensure women are paid the same as men when doing the same jobs. European law has extended the concept of equal pay to include redundancy payments, travel concessions, employers' pension contributions and occupational pension benefits.
