Transport for London (TfL) has been congratulated for joining the government–backed Skills Pledge initiative and guaranteeing all its employees can access quality training. The organisation declared its support to help 20,000 workers develop their basic skills, including literacy and numeracy and work towards qualifications at least equivalent to five GCSEs. "Every employee has the potential to contribute to business performance and improve standards of customer service," said skills minister, David Lammy. TfL's commitment to the scheme has brought the number of workers signed up to the initiative to four million. Mr Lammy met TfL apprentices and staff at the tunnel services building in Wandsworth. He called on "every employer in the country who has not yet done so, to make a public commitment to developing world class skills". The Skills Pledge was launched on June 14th 2007 at an event in London attended by Gordon Brown when 157 employers signed up.
