The Trades Union Council has claimed falling house prices, mortgage issues and a lack of available housing are affecting productivity. Commenting on its latest report, Fair Homes: Building a New Deal for Housing, its general secretary, Brendan Barber, claimed housing problems can transfer to the workplace. "Housing can have a huge impact upon an individual's working life and how productive they are once they go to work," he said. The report advised the UK needed more private homes at affordable prices, new environmentally friendly housing, measures to stabilise house prices and renovation of existing housing stock. "Similarly, workers living in poor housing are more likely to suffer from ill-health, and are likely to be less productive at work," Mr Barber added. "It's a problem the UK economy cannot afford to ignore." The Nationwide Building Society has reported in May, house prices fell at their fastest rate since the recession of the early 1990s. The average UK home now costs £172,415, four per cent higher than two years ago.
