Charity: Business can find inner-city kids work

Thu 10 Jul 2008

Urbis, a charity for inner-city kids, has called on big business to help young people get into work. It told Personnel Today it is moving to help youths in London, Birmingham and Liverpool, following its success in Manchester. "Young people face problems whatever area they come from - whether it is gang and gun crime or suicide rates. It is a tough time but employers can make a difference," said outreach officer, Kirstin Sillitoe. The charity hopes a mixture of government money and investment from the private sector will help it repeat its earlier results. Urbis' most recent project, Reclaim, featured career training and preparation interviews for children on the Moss Side estate. BBC film director, Clare Hoang, was involved in the initiative. She went to school near the area and experienced the "barriers and issues that can affect these young men". The Learning and Skills Council offers more than 180 apprenticeship schemes, which it says gives employers a range of business benefits, including increased productivity.
