Employers could benefit from learning their workers' sleep patterns and organising working hours to suit.

Sleep Council spokesperson, Jessica Alexander, was reflecting on a poll by Crampex, which revealed business looses millions because employees are exhausted, onrec.com has reported.

"With the technology most businesses now have, achieving this kind of time-slip working is the easiest thing in the world," commented customer service manager Kurosh Kiani.

She said there are benefits to an afternoon 'power nap', however it would be more beneficial for firms to monitor when staff were at there most alert.

The Crampex study found only 21 per cent of people got the correct amount of sleep, which was said to be eight hours per night.

Interestingly, Narcolepsy is thought to affect 0.5 per cent of the population. Despite being a sleep-related condition, it lends to disturbed sleep patterns as well as excessive daytime tiredness.

Call centre workers are often employed on shift patterns, which can give part time workers the opportunity to choose when they work.
