Offices and workplaces are stressing out one in three workers, new research suggests. According to employment lawyers, Eversheds, one in five described their office as below average or very poor. "This report highlights a key area in which businesses can make improvements to boost morale and increase productivity," said the firm's Cornelius Medvei. "The standard of the office is one place that employers can control and, if UK businesses are to remain competitive, we need to ensure that we are investing in and creating an optimum working environment." Employees claimed lack of natural light and poor office equipment has a negative effect on their productivity. An earlier report by disability insurer, UnumProvident, found mental ill-health costs the economy as much as £10 billion each year. According to the company's customer care director, Dr Peter Dewis, a "relatively small investment in the support of individual sufferers at an early stage in their illness may help them recover, remain at work or regain employment".
