The UK needs more skilled migrants to secure the future of high-tech knowledge industries, new research has claimed. The Work Foundation has called on policy makers to "do more to ensure the UK remains an attractive place for highly skilled migrants to want to come". It revealed multinational corporations look for regions full of "human capital" and increased levels of multinational workers could help the UK's ability to attract foreign investment. "The UK's best bet for making the most of globalisation is to tap the increasing flows of highly qualified people around the world," said Katerina RĂ¼diger, author of Towards a Global Labour Market? The shift to a 'knowledge economy', the report said, means there will be increasing demand for 'knowledge workers' around the globe "which is unlikely to be met from up-skilling native workers". According to the latest government figures, applications for British citizenship rose by eight per cent in 2007 to 160,980.
