Injured staff return 'too early'

Staff injured in the workplace are returning to work too early because they need the money, a poll has found.

According to the survey by National Accident Helpline, more than half would ignore the dangers of continued ill-health and come back to work prematurely, Personnel Today has reported.

Rising living costs are driving the need for these employees to return quickly and continue earning, the poll claimed.

"It is worrying that people are potentially putting their health at risk because they are bearing the brunt of financial pressures for which they aren't responsible," noted Helpline legal director, John Campbell.

The Health and Safety Executive has said long-term sickness absence costs the UK more than £12 billion a year.

All employers have responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act to protect workers, after they return, if they have become more vulnerable because of illness, injury or disability.
