The 5th annual City & Guilds Happiness Index has revealed the county's happiest workers. In third place were armed forces, second place hairdressers and looking good in first place, Beauticians. One in five (20 per cent) of the UK's armed forces claimed to be happier than they were a year ago, just less than half of hairdressers and 56 per cent of beauticians agreed. The study found pay was still not the most important factor keeping them with their current employer. Professor Cary Cooper assessed the results and said it was time for firms to re-consider their attitude. He said the index is "a call to action for the business community to rethink its reward and recognition strategies, and consider employees' needs on an individual basis". Bob Coates, managing director, City and Guilds, explained that improving workforce happiness "is rising up the business agenda and employers cannot afford to ignore it"
