Diversity employers need to 'practice what they preach'

Diversity and equality advisors need to practice what they preach, according to one of their communities' members. Diversus, a disability consultancy run by disabled people, has explained that making a website more accessible need not be an expensive undertaking. "Because of the way the site will be designed and developed, the site will also benefit from increases in search engine ranking, web presence and upload time," claimed Simon Pawelski, operations director. The organisation has just updated its website and is encouraging diversity advisors to follow their lead. "It is basically just a matter of practising what we preach," said Phil Smears, head of its web accessibility service. Diversus specialises in making organisations accessible to deaf and disabled people. "We pride ourselves on leading by example. This applies to the services we provide as well as the staff we employ," Mr Pawelski added. Global public sector representative, Public Services International, has claimed recent International Labour Office reports suggested the unemployment rate "among workers with disabilities tends to be at least twice or three times that of other workers".
