Immigration from Eastern Europe has not caused unemployment or stopped UK residents finding work, new research has found. A Department for Work and Pensions report concluded new migrants have not increased the number of people claiming benefits or had a significant effect on pay levels. "Migrants from Eastern Europe have come to the UK to work and have been a benefit to our economy, allowing companies to grow and create more jobs," said minister for employment and welfare reform, Stephen Timms. "The numbers of people claiming unemployment benefits are at levels as low as 30 years ago, while the number of vacancies in the economy continue to rise." Labour market statistics for June have revealed employment has risen by 76,000 on the quarter and vacancies are at an all time high, 678,000.
