The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has said the gender pay gap will close 'slowly'. Sarah Veal, head of equality and employment rights, has questioned whether people should wait for society to accept the economic reality of equal pay. She said either we wait or "give it a bit of a push or a shove with a refreshing of the equality and sex discrimination laws to ginger employers up a bit". "There is an awful lot that has to be done to put women in the position where they absolutely would have to be paid equally." A recent National Statistics report revealed women could lose £330,000 earnings over their lifetime, compared to men. Ms Veal said the TUC was not interested in differential pay and would prefer to change the perception of women's worth so that it "is based on something other than the hours they spend in the office".
