The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has become the largest organisation to be awarded the Investors in People standard. The award recognised good practice and a sound approach to flexible working within a ministry that employs 276,000 people. "IiP recognition across the whole department is a fantastic achievement," said permanent under secretary, Bill Jeffrey. He noted: "The IiP process is, in effect, an audit of what we are doing to improve our management of people." The Investors in People benchmark is used to recognise good practice in human resources development and its positive effects on workers and their employers. The Mod employs a wide variety of professionals including civil servants, clerical workers, researchers and historians. Investors in People UK was formed in 1993 and aims to work in partnership with organisations and people throughout the UK "to improve their productivity and performance and realise their full potential".
