Young Brits lose work/life balance

Young British adults are working longer hours and losing their work/life balance, new research has suggested. More than 90 per cent of young workers are neglecting their home lives because of long hours and working commitments, a study conducted by American Express found. Chris Rolland, head of insurance services, noted they "face a lot of choices in today's busy working life". "The more choices they have, the less time they end up having," he added. Of those polled, just less than 50 per cent in their 20s said they had no personal time outside of work and many found it difficult to 'switch off' when away from the office. Keeping in touch with relatives, cooking and exercising properly were all reported to have taken a back seat because of increased time spent working. Average earnings, including bonuses, rose by 3.8 per cent in the year to April 2008, down from four per cent in March, recent Labour market statistics showed.
