A new government proposal could reduce the UK's carbon footprint and create 160,000 jobs. The national renewable energy blueprint has been announced by business secretary, John Hutton. It aims to help reduce oil and gas dependency and increase investment in environmental business development. "We must make the most rapid progress possible to becoming a cleaner, greener economy and we will strive to make these changes in the most effective way possible, with the least cost to consumers," Mr Hutton said. The proposal is designed to help the UK meet its 15 per cent renewable energy target by 2020 by using renewable forms of heat and transport fuels. By adopting new environmentally friendly energy models, the government is hoping to create new 'green collar' jobs by making the most of the county's established manufacturing economy. The Department for Business and Regulatory Reform noted there were key opportunities "arising out of research, innovation and development by using the UK's specific geographical advantages such as wave and tidal power". According to Alternative Energy News, green collar jobs involve the design, manufacture, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
