The government has introduced compulsory data protection training following recent high profile data losses. The announcement follows the publication of Sir Gus O'Donnell's report, which set out the actions needed to enhance the consistency of information protection. "No organisation handling information can guarantee it will never experience losses," he noted. "Every loss or near miss must make us more determined. The action now underway will raise our game, but the task of improving information security will always be a continuing process." All civil servants handling sensitive information will receive training and about 90,000 personnel at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are already learning new procedures. Recently, there has been a series of government data losses, including the misplacing of a Ministry of Defence laptop and discs containing child protection data.
