Bidders for government contracts will have to reveal their pay levels for either sex, the party's deputy leader will announce today, it has been reported. Harriet Harman hopes to pressure companies that consider fair pay legislation optional and close the remaining gender pay gap. She received support from the Trades Union Congress (TUC), whose spokesperson said: "We welcome any move to close the pay gap because it is clear that the voluntary approach has not worked." The TUC has also claimed the public supports its claims for equal pay deals for public service workers. It cited a recent YouGov poll, which revealed 79 per cent agreed public sector pay should keep up with the cost of living and 68 per cent said it was unfair if their pay rises were less than other workers. Currently, the government calculates public sector pay awards based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The TUC has complained this measure excludes increasing housing costs and leaves public servants out of pocket.
