The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has welcomed the government's decision not to do away with the domestic worker visa. By keeping the current system, the Home Office is continuing to allow domestic workers to apply for work through recruitment agencies. Anne Fairweather, head of public policy, praised the decision, saying: "Domestic workers often provide vital in-house support for busy families and may assist in the care of children and elderly relatives." She also noted recruitment agencies sometimes offered them an option to "escape abusive employment relationships with the families they are based with". Under the government's new immigration law, people will have to become licensed to sponsor family members to visit from abroad and could be fined £5,000 or jailed should they ignore the rules.
