Companies set degree 'benchmark'

Many companies use the top two grades of degree as a standard for selecting graduates, the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) has said. Its latest review of graduate recruiters found nearly half of those who anticipated future recruiting challenges said there are not enough suitably qualified applicants. "Having advertised that they will only accept firsts or 2:1's, they cannot compromise," said communications director, Elspeth Farrar. "They are increasingly looking in a very small pool of talent by using these sorts of benchmarks for selection and everybody else is looking in that very small pool of talent." Not all companies insist that applicants should have degree level qualifications - people with work and life experience are also highly sought after as they bring different skills. Ms Farrar went on to suggest that companies use a different approach when recruiting. "Maybe they should be putting their emphasis into having trust in their own selection processes and using those to screen out, rather than using benchmarks like firsts or 2:1's."
