The UK is confident about finding work, according to research by the Nationwide Building Society. It compiled a series of reports, which detailed consumers' optimism for the coming year. Its Expectation Index showed more than half of people surveyed believe there are some or many jobs available at present and 39 per cent think this will also be the case in six months. Martin Gahbauer, senior economist explained there was "increased uncertainty" about economic conditions but added, "consumers remain relatively positive about their employment situation both now and in six months time". The Spending Index fell four points to 64, the Confidence Index fell three points to 78 and the Present Situation Index saw the biggest drop. Nationwide believes the optimism around job prospects helped consumers remain confident about their household finances. In spite of greater economic uncertainty, 87 per cent think their household income will be the same or better in six month's time. Recent government employment figures have showed the number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count have all fallen.
