Healthcare professionals have signed an agreement to advise patients of the important health benefits of work. The consensus statement supports evidence that shows staying in work is good for health and recovery, the government news network reports. "For too long it has been automatically assumed that a return to work would be bad for your health," said Work and Pensions Secretary, James Purnell. "The health profession are recognising the role that work can play in getting people fit and healthy and it will create a crucial culture change for the welfare state." Dame Carol Black, National Director for Health and Work is leading a review of the health of the working population, which will announce its results later this month. Currently the mandatory retirement age in the UK is 65. The government has previously proposed this be raised to 68 to reflect increased longevity and help pay for state pensions.
